National Writers Union Mentoring Program

The NWU Mentoring Program, free to NWU members and available to non-member associates under the Young Writers Outreach program (YWO), connects experienced professional writers willing to share their expertise in a particular area with writers new to that field − through meetings in person, by telephone, or by email/text/chat.

What kinds of writers can benefit from this program? Whom is it for?

  • A fiction writer who has written stories and now wants to submit them for publication but doesn't know how.

  • A journalist who wants to pitch his or her first article proposal to a national magazine and wants to know an effective pitch letter format.

  • A business writer looking for advice on strategies for finding clients.

  • A poet who wants to submit his or her work to quality literary publications that pay and treat writers well.

  • A book writer trying to hone a query letter or book proposal to send to an agent or publisher.

  • An essayist who wants to know what publications take such pieces − and pay for them.

Who is eligible: Nonmember writers ages 18-25 may participate in YWO. Full members of any age may participate in the Mentorship program.

Cost: For the annual rate of $65, which enters them into the associate program (they can join right off the Web), young writers may join YWO. Members who want to participate in the Mentorship program need only be current in their dues.
