Report from our 2010 Book Party

Reprinted from eNews

Our January book party drew 75 writers from as far as New Hampshire and Cape Cod for an afternoon of celebrating the 23 NWU Boston Chapter authors who published books in 2009. After munching on potluck party food, we were treated to excerpts of six of those books followed by guest speaker Steve Almond's perspectives on writing, publishing and life. As writers socialized and digested the literary and culinary tidbits, Kevin Symmons, who came with fellow members of the Cape Cod Writers Center, said, "We found Steve Almond's irreverent wit tremendously entertaining."

Some comments from other attendees:

"It was a real pleasure to listen to and interact with other writers concerned with issues of social justice," said new member Steve Fake, whose book on Darfur was one of those published in 2009.
"It was nice to be able to welcome a couple of new members personally and encourage them, as well as to see people I already know whom I would not otherwise meet," observed long-term member Eve Sullivan.
"I always love the NWU party and this year's readers were excellent," reported Janet Spurr.
"It was a gas to host the guests from so many other writers' organizations, including the posse that came all the way from the Cape," said eNews editor Sue Katz.

Whispered in the ears of the co-chairs were suggestions for next year that we urge healthier food contributions, get people to turn off their cell phones during presentations and expand the successful idea of inviting members of other writers' groups.

The readers were memoirist Li Mo, novelist Randy Susan Meyers, essayist/memoirist Judah Leblang, French poetry translator J. Kates, non-fiction writer and expert on bullying Carol Wintle, and labor journalist Steve Early. You can find the full list of members who published books in 2009 here.
