Optimizing Your Web Presence
Writers with websites discovered 10 simple steps they can take
to enhance their websites at Jeannette Cezanne's June "Optimizing
Your Web Presence" workshop. Cezanne described how Google's
"spiders" roam websites and will put your website higher up. "I
took more notes in an hour's time than I've done for years and
learned practical things I can do quickly that will really help, like
getting your site mentioned elsewhere or comment on blogs and
cite your own site," said Louise Dunlap, author of a new book on
social change writing, Undoing Silence.
Cezanne said that even though the first three pages are often
dominated by information sites (Wikipedia and .edu and .gov
sites -- "no one can compete against them"), placement in the
first three pages is quite feasible for at least some keywords. As
a first step, enter "metatags" (title, up to 7 keywords, description)
for each page along with at least 250-300 words of content on
the page that includes those keywords. Post new content regularly.
Offer a blog. Comment substantively on other blogs and websites.
The second half of Cezanne's workshop explained how freelancers
can earn income by learning Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
and then offering SEO services, which pay well and support your
other writing projects.
"Jeannette clearly demystifies what SEO is about: you optimize
pages, not the website overall. The most important work you can,
and must, do yourself," said Artemis March, author of a mother-
daughter book on dying gracefully, Dying Into Grace.
To hear other tips on making your website more prominent, come
to the workshop that Cezanne will repeat this fall.
