Charles Coe: As a member since the mid 80s, I've been involved with the NWU at both the local and national level. I'm a long-time member and co-chair of the Boston Chapter steering committee. I served on the union's national management board for several years, and co-founded the union's National Diversity Committee. I'm president of the National Writers United Service Organization, the NWU-affiliated nonprofit that has administered the Bellwether Prize, a $25,000 award given every other year to the author of a novel that addresses some important social issue. My particular focus at this time is to work with the national office to identify ways to help our members effectively organize and advocate for writers rights in a particularly challenging economic environment and and at a time when it can be difficult to generate support for progressive social movements. Jeanne K. Cosmos, JD, MFA: With the present turmoil in this nation in re: union issues, I am running for delegate. My writing and my teaching as an Adjunct Lecturer in urban community colleges are about fairness and supporting those who need an opportunity or a hand in moving forward and finding their way for a better quality life; one which embraces respect, shared values and community. My support of those unable to speak for themselves in the law and academics dovetails with the spirit of the NWU. I am committed to supporting value for creative work and fair payments for writing in various forums. Lee Ann Hoff: As a member since 1988, NWU has informed me over book publishing hurdles, especially copyright issues. Before NWU membership, I was one of many academics who "blissfully" accept publishers' requests to relinquish copyright. As a delegate I would share lessons about this issue from workshops and work with contributing authors to my recent texts (3 plus one in-press: 2009 through 2012). Besides full participation in the Delegate Assembly, I would network regarding appropriate avenues for sharing these copyright lessons nationally with academic writers, hoping thereby to also recruit them to NWU membership. Sue Katz: An NWU activist for nearly a decade, I have served as a co-chair, delegate and diversity committee member. I participated in NWU campaigns and now edit both Boston's eNews and the national NWUsletter. I am an author ("Thanks But No Thanks: The Voters Guide to Sarah Palin"), a blogger (Consenting Adult: www.suekatz.typepad.com) and a journalist. In these tough times of vicious anti-union attacks and dwindling opportunities to find paid writing work, the NWU has never been more important. As I highly respect the commitment of NWU's national and local officers, I would welcome the chance to be a Delegate. Boston Chapter members Barbara Beckwith, Jeanne Harnois, and Barbara Mende will attend the Delegate Assembly as national officers.
